Interpretation of the Bible: How or Who?

If we look around us today, there are so many different churches and different doctrines. Each church interprets the bible in their own way and those interpretations are different from church to church. What is worse is that each member-even in the same church-has a different understanding of the bible according to their own interpretation.

Christ said that we have to know the truth to be saved. However, today the concept of the truth is decentralized and deconstructed and people acts as if they were happy with many different understandings of the bible. Even people in the academic world encourage the environment of the diversities in understanding and interpretation.

Once Jeremiah lamented of idolatries of the Israelites each of whom followed different idols according to their own understanding of God and the bible.

Jeremiah 2:28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you, Judah, have as many gods as you have towns.

This can be said to our situation too where each person and each church and each community have their own interpretation of the bible and each of them have their own God and Christ according to their understanding of the bible. In the realm of humanities as scholastic field, this might be recommendable and it cannot cause that serious problems. However, this can cause a lot of confusion and hinder the understanding of the truth the bible wants to show us.

    The Essence of the Bible

The most essential teaching of the bible is that there is the God in the spiritual world and God wants to teach us the truth that can give us salvation. The concept of the truth is most important in reading the bible.

John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Jesus Christ teaches us that the Truth can set us free from sin and death. Therefore, in reading the bible, what we have to care about most is “finding the truth”. Then, among so many interpretations of the bible, how can we find the truth?

    Not How, But Who

To find the truth what we have to remember is the way we can find the truth. Many people think that they can know the truth if they know how to interpret the bible. For this reason, they have tried to find the right way to interpret the bible. Some people used a logical way of thinking to interpret the bible. Some people used an allegorical method, or story-telling, historical fact, numerical analysis, etc.

With these methods, they could produce plausible interpretations of what they read, which seems to make sense in certain aspects. But none of them could find “the voice of the seven thunders,” or the perfect words of God (the truth). Each interpretation had its own limits in so much as that they had their own merits.

Then why could they not find the truth? Were they lacking in wisdom, knowledge, acuity in thinking, or logical power? All these things might have had some impact in the failure of finding the truth. But what is more important is the more fundamental matter in the interpretation of the bible. That is, the correct interpretation of the bible does not depend on the methods of the interpretation, but the person who interprets the bible.

Interpretation of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

    The interpretation of the bible.
God said, “Do not eat”, and the Serpent said, “You can eat.” Then how can we know the truth in this situation?

Let me give you one example. In the Garden of Eden, there was a tree, called “The Tree of the knowledge of good and evil”. For this tree, two different interpretations were given to Adam and Eve. One was the truth that could give them life, but the other was falsehood which could mislead them and destroy them. The one interpretation was given like this:

Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.

And the other interpretation of the tree was written in this way:

Genesis 3:4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The Bible Truth Lies in the Interpreter

The first interpretation of the tree was from God who planted the tree in the garden and his message was very clear and simple. However, the second interpretation was from the serpent or Satan. And the interpretation is completely opposite of the first interpretation with more rhetorical aspects in it to make his message more plausible. And since the second interpretation was more “pleasing” to the ear and seems to be more “desirable”, they followed the second interpretation only to be destined to die.

Then what made the first interpretation true and the second one false? It did not depend on the manner and figures of the speech; nor did it in knowledge, wisdom, logical acuity, etc. The truth lay on the person who made the comment. The comment of God was the truth and the comment of the serpent was false. Therefore, in finding the truth what we have to do is to find the right person who has the authority to interpret the bible.

    Sealing of the Bible

The bible prophesies that the words of God in the bible would be sealed up and there would be no one who can interpret the bible.

Revelation 5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

According to the first verse above, the bible says that the book of God would be sealed with seven seals. “Seven” in the bible means “perfection” or “completion”. In this sense, we can know the bible is completely sealed up in the last days. The truth Jesus taught in his first coming came to be hidden and sealed completely and no one would be able to know the meaning of the bible. The bible says no one—angels above, men on the earth—can understand the bible and no one can give true interpretation of the bible. No human being with his knowledge or wisdom can open the bible; nor can they see the message in it.

    The Root of David

Since this is what would happen in the last days, it is natural to say that we cannot interpret the bible through our wisdom or knowledge. If then, how come there are so many people who says that they can interpret the bible? According to the bible, however, there is one who can open the seals of the bible and see what is written in the bible: the Root of David. Therefore, to find the truth in the last days, we have to know who the Root of David is and meet him to receive his teaching.

Except for the interpretation of the Root of David, all other interpretations—however they might look logical, sensible, plausible—are just false ones which have nothing to do with the truth. As I said before, the manner of interpretation does not matter. What matters is the one who has authority to interpret the bible, in this case, the Root of David. Without knowing and receiving the Root of David, we would never be able to find the truth.

    Conclusion

Today, there are so many people who interpret the bible with knowledge and wisdom. They put their whole life to seek the truth in the bible. What they don’t realize is that they are following the wrong direction out of ignorance and misunderstanding of the prophecies of the bible. The only way to know the truth in the bible is through the Root of David who would appear as legitimate interpreter of the bible in the last days. Therefore, the question we should ask to find the truth is “Who is the Root of the David?” It is not “How should we interpret the bible?” Then who is the Root of David?

Revelation 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you[a] this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

According to the bible, the Root of David is the second coming Christ who would come in the last days. It means Christ himself is the only one who has authority to open the seals and give the correct interpretation of the bible. When someone says that he can interpret the bible, we should ask him first, “Are you the Root of David?” And we have to have spiritual eyes to distinguish the truth from the falsehood.

Christ Ahnsahnghong the Root of David

Christ Ahnsahnghong came as the Root of David and opened the seven seals of the bible. To find more about the prophecies of the Root of David, please visit the links below. And you will come to understand that Christ Ahnsahnghong is the Root of David the bible testifies about.

I hope you would meet the Root of David and find the truth that gives life for your soul.

    [WMSCOG] The Bible And Parable

The reason it is hard for us to understand the bible is because it is written in figurative language or in parable which contains hidden meanings. When we try to understand the bible in the literal sense, it does not make much sense at all. Especially, the Book of Revelation sounds like a fantasy novel with dragon, war, beast coming out of the sea, a woman sitting on waters. Literally, these symbols and images do not make sense at all. That is why we have to know the parable and understand the hidden meaning in it.

    Jesus and Parables

Matthew 13:34  Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. 35 So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

2000 years ago when Jesus came down to this earth, it was the same. Whenever he spoke to teach the kingdom of heaven, he spoke in parables. That is why it was hard for the people of the time to understand the meaning of the stories. Then why was he speaking in parable or in the figurative language instead of simple and easy expression?

Matthew 13:10   The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” 11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

Revelation 20:11 There before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. Will God appear riding on a white horse in the last days?

His disciples were curious about that too and asked him for the reason he was using the parables. He said that  parable contains the secret of the kingdom of heaven, but the problem is the secret was allowed to know for everybody. It means he was separating through the parables the two types of people: those who are allowed to know the meaning of the parable and those who are not. That is why those who were not allowed to know the meaning were like those who had ear but could not hear and had eyes but could not see. They could not understand the meaning and they could not know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven.

    How to understand the parable

Since each parable contains the secret of the kingdom of heaven, those who want to enter the kingdom of heaven must understand the meaning of the parable. Then how can we understand the menaing of the parable? Can we know the meaning of a parable in a newspaper, some dissertations by scholars, or in a library? No. The meaning of the parable can only be explained by the one who spoke the parable. Since the bible and the parables in the bible was given by God and Jesus, we must listen to God’s teaching.

Mark 4:33  With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Even though he spoke in parables in public, but whenever he was alone with his disciple (or God’s people who were allowed to know the meaning of the parable), he expained the true meanings to them so that they could know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. That is why to understand the true meaning of the parable we must take a look at the teachings of Jesus in the bible. Only through the bible can we understand the true meaning. Many people try to interpret the bible with their clever ideas which seemingly perfectly explains the meaning of a parable, but it should be considered as a theory until it is confirmed through the words of God in the bible.

    Sealing of the bible

Even though Jesus came and taught all the parables of the bible, the teachings of Jesus was taken away by the work of Satan during the Dark Ages. Instead of following the teaching of Jesus, people started to interpret the bible by using man’s wisdom, Greek philosophy and finally the ture teachings of God was forgotten. But according to the bible a man cannot fathom the providence of God with his own wisdom and understanding.

Isaiah 55:8   “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Ultimately all the truth was abolished and only falsehood spread out like weeds all through the world. (Matthew 13:24; 13:36) Even though there were many teachings about the bible and parables, there was no true teaching which could let us know the secret of the kingdom of heaven. About this situation, the Revelation says that the bible is sealed up with seven seals and no one can understand the meaning of the bible. Even though people have eyes they cannot see; ears, they cannot hear.

This is our present situation and the bible is sealed up with seven seals or complete seals because seven in the bible means completion or perfection. In this situation, who can expect to enter the kingdom of heaven?

    Conclusion

The bible also prophesies that the seals will be broken and the parables would be explained in the last days.

Revelation 22:10  Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near.

Therefore, those who are living in the last days must know two things to receive salvation: first, they must know that all the teachings of God are parables and second, it is only through God and his words in the bible that we can understand the meanings of the parables in the bible. Jesus opened his mouth in parable to teach us the kingdom of heaven: “the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mt 24:30), when the fig tree is blossoming again, “you know that he (the Son of Man) is near” (Mt 24:33).

Do “Clouds and fig tree” literally mean the clouds and tree? Or does it mean something else? Isn’t the answer easy? Since the bible says, “He did not say anything without using the parable.” Therefore, we must know these are all parables and it is only Christ himself who will be able to open the seals and give the true interpretation of the bible. That is why just like 2000 years ago he must come back as man in the flesh and teach us everything again so that we can know the meaning of the bible and to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
