Through Prophet Isaiah, God is rebuking people for pursuing worthless things wasting their time and money.
Isaiah 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
God admonishes us not to spend our money and labor for things that are not bread and that do not satisfy? Then what is the true bread or food that we have to work for to get?
Amos 9:11 “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine through the land– not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.
Prophet Amos teaches us about the famine that is caused by the lack of the words of God. The words of God is the bread or food that we should work for. In this sense we can say that the word of God is the true bread.
Jesus also teaches that the words of God is the true bread. The bread helps us to sustain our life and without bread we cannot live. Spiritually it is the same. Without eating the bread, we cannot sustain our spiritual life that is eternal life. For this reason, Jesus teaches us that we should work for the bread that gives us eternal life?
John 6:27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.
We have to make efforts to get the food that gives us eternal life. And it is only Christ or the Son of Man who can give us the bread or the the words of God. Then what is the bread of life that gives us eternal life. Jesus continues to teach his disciples that he is the bread of life, and they have to eat his flesh and blood to receive the eternal life.
Jesus was the true bread, the words of God. And John teaches that the Word of God became flesh and came down to this earth in the name of Jesus Christ. For this reason, Jesus is the true bread of life that we have to eat to live forever.
John 6:53 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
Through this we can see the true bread that gives us eternal life is the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ. And on the night of the Passover, he taught his disciples about how to eat his flesh and drink his blood.
Matthew 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
This means that the bread of the Passover represents the flesh of Christ and the wine his blood. When we keep the Passover by eating the bread and drinking wine we can receive the flesh and blood of Christ, which is the true bread and drink that give us eternal life. Let us keep the Passover. Then we can receive the promise of Jesus and can have eternal life.
